International Telecommunication Union launches 6G research-CnTechPost

Research work oriented to the 2030 and beyond (6G) was commenced at the 34th International Telecommunication Union Radiocommunication Sector Working Group 5D (ITU-R WP5D) meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, Sohu IT cited the China Academy of Information and Communication Technology as saying on March 3.

This meeting formed a preliminary 6G research timetable, including important planning nodes such as future technology trend research reports and future technology vision proposals.

The ITU will initiate the writing of the "Future Technology Trend Report", which is scheduled to be completed in June 2022. This report describes the technical evolution direction of IMT systems after 5G, including IMT evolution technology, high-spectrum efficiency technology and deployment.

In addition, the ITU plans to launch a "future technology vision proposal" in the first half of 2021 and complete it in June 2023.

This Recommendation contains the overall goals of IMT systems facing 2030 and beyond, such as application scenarios, major system capabilities, etc. At present, the ITU has not yet determined the development plan for the 6G standard.

Earlier, manufacturers such as China Mobile, Huawei, and Samsung all stated that research on 6G technology had been initiated internally.

China aims to form 6G overall development ideas in 2020, the People's Post reported in January citing Wen Ku, Director of the Information and Communication Development Department of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

To achieve that goal, Wen said recently China will push forward the research of the technology’s potential and forward-looking vision in 2020, according to the report.

On November 3, 2019, the Ministry of Science and Technology, together with six other ministries in China organized a 6G technology research and development conference in Beijing.

A national 6G technology R&D working group and an overall expert group were established at the event.

Among them, the working group is composed of relevant government departments and is responsible for promoting the implementation of 6G technology R&D.
