In the fourth quarter of 2019, the number of 5G phones that applied for network access in China was 50, accounting for 39.06% of the total. They all support China's BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS), according to a report released by the China Information and Communication Academy on January 20.
The report said that in the fourth quarter of 2019, there were 128 mobile phone products applying for network access, including 104 models that support positioning functions, all of which are 4G and 5G mobile phones.
There are 34 4G mobile phones supporting BeiDou Navigation, and all 50 5G phones applying for network access support the system, according to the report.
On December 27 last year, Ran Chengqi, director of China Satellite Navigation System Management Office and spokesperson of BeiDou Satellite Navigation System, said that 70% of China's smart phones use Beidou system.
The reason why users don't feel it is because mobile phones often use the three letters "GPS" to represent all navigation systems, he explained.
"When the satellite navigation service first appeared, the most used system in the world was GPS. This created the habit of thinking of GPS when it comes to satellite navigation." Ran said that mobile phone manufacturers and map software manufacturers often use “GPS" instead of satellite navigation.
Ran said that, in fact, the navigation system used in mobile phones is a multi-system fusion, including BeiDou.
"In terms of performance, Beidou is one of the best navigation systems in the world." Ran Chengqi called for mobile phone manufacturers and map software manufacturers to make adaptive adjustments according to the situation of satellite navigation and change the wording of "GPS" into a satellite navigation.
