Motorola has postponed the launch of the clamshell foldable smartphone Razr in North America, saying that demand for this $1,500 device has exceeded its supply expectations.
The phone was released in November this year and was originally scheduled to start accepting orders in December and began shipping to customers in January 2020.
But Motorola issued a statement on Friday, saying: "Motorola has decided to adjust Razr's pre-sale and delivery time to better meet consumer demand. We are working to determine the appropriate quantity and schedule to ensure more Consumers get Razr when they launch. "
The company declined to say when the phone will go on sale but said it didn't expect it to be "too big" from the original schedule. In an interview earlier this year, Motorola President Sergio Buniac said he wants demand to be "a little bit more" than supply.
Motorola did not blame the technical delay on the delayed listing. Other companies, such as Samsung Electronics, have struggled to launch foldable devices on time due to screen failures. When Motorola announced the device, design director Ruben Castano said: "We feel like we've really developed a powerful solution."
The foldable Razr looks similar to the original model in the early 2000s but runs Google's Android operating system with touch screens inside and out. Motorola previously said that the phone will also be sold in Europe, Latin America, Asia and Australia, but did not share the latest release information in these regions on Friday.
