Huawei plans to unveil a smart speaker at the end of November, jumping into a new market that has long been dominated by Google, Amazon, Apple and Alibaba, according a report from Chinese media outlets.
The product will be jointly developed by Huawei and Devialet, a French company known for their high definition audio system, especially their oval-shaped high definition speakers and amplifiers, Shanghai-based Cailian Press reported citing supply chain sources.
The smart speaker will adopt technology under Devialet’s patents while the speaker components will be supplied by local suppliers in China, the report said.
Meanwhile according to images posted by a Weibo user, the smart speaker is called “Sound X” and will be unveiled on November 25 in Shanghai.
Huawei will hold an event on November 25 in Shanghai, Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei's consumer business group said Friday on Weibo.
Yu said Huawei will release a new device for the Mate series and show an image of “Mate” with the “M” blurred in the first half and apparently the “Pad” on the right, triggering speculation a MatePad will be announced.
As the event draws near, it is expected the smart speaker could also be announced during the event.
Devialet produces premium wireless speakers with the entry-level Classic Phantom boasting 1200 watts of power and comes with a $1,090 price tag.
