Chinese AI startup Zhipu announced the open-sourcing of its new generation flagship large model, GLM-5.1.

The move represents a significant step for Chinese AI large models in core technology scenarios, marking a new journey for its technical capabilities and commercialization process.

GLM-5.1 is currently the only open-source model capable of eight hours of continuous work, and it performed exceptionally well in the SWE-bench Pro benchmark, which most closely resembles real-world software development, according to an announcement on Wednesday.

Unlike previous models that interact on a minute-level basis, the new model can work independently and continuously for over eight hours on a single task, during which it autonomously plans, executes, and self-evolves to ultimately deliver complete engineering-level results, Zhipu said.

In benchmark testing, the model surpassed Anthropic's Opus 4.6, marking the first time a Chinese model has achieved such a result, the company said.

Alongside the open-source release, Zhipu has raised GLM prices by another 10%, according to pricing shown on OpenRouter.

Following the price adjustment, the cost of cache-hit tokens for GLM-5.1 in coding scenarios is now close to the level of Anthropic's Claude Sonnet 4.6, marking the first time a Chinese large model has aligned its pricing with top overseas vendors in core scenarios.

The technical release comes as the AI firm, which just went public in Hong Kong earlier this year, has achieved significant results in commercialization.

Zhipu's total revenue reached 724 million yuan ($106 million) in 2025, representing a year-on-year growth of 131.9%, with revenue from its cloud-based deployment business tripling over the past year.

However, as the AI race continues to heat up, research and development costs driven by model iterations widened the company's net loss to 4.72 billion yuan in 2025.

Leveraging its engineering reasoning capabilities, Zhipu's developer ecosystem is expanding globally, with the number of paid developers for its Coding Plan exceeding 242,000.

The company's moat lies in the underlying deconstruction of the essence of intelligence, and its goal is to become the infrastructure for the whole society to enhance architectural capabilities, the company said.
