Alibaba's research arm, Damo Academy, officially unveiled its next-generation flagship processor, the XuanTie C950, at the 2026 XuanTie RISC-V Ecosystem Conference on Tuesday.

The new processor adopts an advanced 5-nanometer manufacturing process and reaches a maximum operating frequency of 3.2 GHz, according to a statement by Alibaba.

The processor's single-core performance score breached the 70-point mark for the first time, while its overall computing performance is considered to be more than three times that of its predecessor, the XuanTie C920.

The CPU is deeply optimized for cloud computing, allowing customers to tailor the chip for specific inferencing uses, Alibaba said.

Alibaba is one of China's leading AI players, and its chip subsidiary T-Head aims to compete fiercely with Nvidia and Huawei in the domestic market.

The company's CEO Eddie Wu told investors during a quarterly earnings call last week that the company's proprietary AI accelerators have already entered mass production.

T-Head has already made significant headway in securing major corporate customers, and Alibaba is currently preparing for a separate public listing of the chip unit.

The Hangzhou-based company launched its first AI smart glasses last November. Yesterday, a local media outlet reported that Alibaba will build new hardware devices specifically designed for OpenClaw AI applications.

The release of the new flagship chip comes as explosive global AI demand and significantly higher supply chain costs put immense upward pressure on core hardware procurement expenses.

Alibaba Cloud announced in a statement last week that it will substantially raise the prices of its core AI computing products by 5% to 34%, effective April 18, 2026.

Key computing products such as T-Head's Zhenwu 810E will face significant price hikes, while service fees for the file storage product CPFS will also be raised by 30% simultaneously.

A recent surge in token usage for large language models is another core reason prompting Alibaba Cloud's management to drastically increase infrastructure prices.

Alibaba Cloud's price hike is not an isolated case, as the entire Chinese AI industry is currently facing severe challenges regarding the supply-demand imbalance of computing power and strict cost controls.

Startup Zhipu AI suffered a severe computing power shortage crisis last month due to surging demand for its next-generation flagship model GLM-5, prompting it to actively seek deep supply chain partnerships.
