As tech giants race to secure hardware gateways for the AI era, ByteDance has chosen to temporarily step back.

The company internally confirmed the suspension of its Doubao AI glasses project in February, and the product line will no longer be considered a key breakthrough direction for the foreseeable future, according to a Monday report by local media outlet Z Finance.

The decision marks a contrast to market rumors from two months ago. Reports in January suggested that the Doubao AI glasses were about to enter the shipping phase.

The rumors at the time were rich in detail, indicating that the Doubao AI glasses were co-developed with Shanghai Longcheer Technology, weighed less than 50 grams, and had a starting price of under 2,000 yuan ($290).

There were even rumors suggesting that a screenless version was scheduled for release in the first quarter of 2026.

However, a Doubao representative subsequently denied these rumors, stating that there were no clear sales plans at the time.

Internally, the Doubao glasses were not positioned as an ordinary consumer electronics product. They carried high expectations and were aimed at becoming a "next-generation gateway" that bypasses traditional apps and operating systems, according to Z Finance.

For ByteDance, which relies heavily on algorithmic distribution, such a direct path to users is highly attractive. But the prerequisite is that it must be a device users are willing to wear every day.

The core reason for the project's suspension lies in ByteDance's internal assessment that it is currently very difficult to create true differentiation in AI glasses, the report noted.

The current AI glasses supply chain is already mature, with the mainstream format standardized by Ray-Ban Meta — large black frames, voice interaction, photography, and translation have become industry standards.

Market data corroborates this landscape. Omdia data shows that global AI glasses shipments reached 8.7 million units in 2025.

In a market with such massive volume and clear benchmarks, it is difficult for latecomers to develop true differentiation capabilities.

Meanwhile, China's AI glasses market is experiencing explosive growth. Shipments in the Chinese mainland approached 1 million pairs in 2025, making it the world's second-largest market.

New products launched by companies like Alibaba have seen robust sales, and smart glasses have even been included in China's national trade-in subsidy list.

The Chinese mainland's shipments approached 1 million units in 2025, making it the second-largest market by volume.
