Global smartphone shipments totaled 295 million units in the first quarter, down about 15.6 percent year-on-year, according to market research firm Counterpoint.
Samsung, Huawei and Apple topped the top three in shipments with 59 million, 49 million and 40 million, respectively, with a market share of 20%, 17% and 14%, respectively, compared to 21%, 17% and 12% in the same period last year.
According to Counterpoint's analysis, the market share of the top 10 brands in terms of shipments has reached 83%, compared to 80% in the same period last year, and this trend of head brands eating up market share will continue.
Samsung dominated the smartphone market at this point in the quarter, with shipments accounting for a fifth of global smartphone shipments. However, the manufacturer's shipments are still down 18% year-on-year and are expected to continue to decline in the second quarter.
Huawei surpassed Apple again this quarter, with shipments down 17 percent year-over-year. According to Counterpoint's analysis, more than half of Huawei's smartphone shipments come from the Chinese market.
Apple's resilience has been very good, with a 5% year-over-year decline in the quarter and a 7% year-over-year decline in iPhone revenue, with little impact on some European and Asian countries and regions.
Xiaomi continues to lead the Indian smartphone market with a 7% year-on-year growth in the quarter and reached its highest market share (30%) since Q1 2018.
For other brands, Vivo had a smaller decline in the quarter (down 10% year-over-year). The strong performance of the Indian smartphone market has offset the decline in other markets.
