Some users have recently reported some issues with the OnePlus 8 Pro's display, including a green screen, loss of black detail (black crush) at low brightness, image residuals and burnt screen, and a green hue at lower brightness.
OnePlus has taken note of the issues reflected by users on its forums, with a staff member stating in a response.
Hi everyone, thanks for the feedback.
Our team is currently investigating these reports to identify the best solutions, and we will issue updates as soon as they are ready.
Regarding green tint, when the brightness of an AMOLED display is turned very low, some users may notice some discoloration that disappears when the screen brightness increases.
We are working to resolve this in our next OTA.
The following two images show OnePlus forum members comparing the display on the OnePlus 8 Pro and the Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ when playing video on Netflix.
The OnePlus phone exhibits significantly more black pixel blocks (black crush) in darker areas.
The photo below shows the image retention issue, the first image was provided by another OnePlus forum member.
The second image, courtesy of a reddit user, has a strange black bar across the top of the display that appears to be coming from the camera.
There is also the issue of the green screen.
It has to be said that some of these problems are inherent to OLED screens.
The first is the first problem, what is commonly referred to as the "black crush" problem, which is essentially a quantifiable near-black phenomenon that occurs during the transition from black to near-black or darker gray.
This is a problem that many OLED panels encounter and may be a result of the lower bit depths assigned to the display at lower brightness levels, especially evident in dark, compressed content.
The green tint issue is also relevant, as OLED panels can experience chromatic aberration at lower brightnesses, especially if the user has DC dimming enabled.
This is the result of OLED technology and how DC dimming works, but again, this problem can be mitigated with good calibration at all points in the brightness range.
While image residuals are also an inherent problem with OLED panels, there's no reason for such a new display to suffer from this, and it's odd that some users have even reflected on the burning screen issue.
