China's phone shipments plunged more than 50% in Feb-CnTechPost

Mobile phone shipments in China went down by 56.0 percent year over year to 6.4 million units, data released by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT) showed today.

Mobile phone shipments by local brands went down by 55.3 percent y/y to 5.9 million units, accounting for 91.8 percent of the mobile phone shipments in China.

Smartphone shipments in February went down by 54.7 percent y/y to 6.3 million units, and accounted for 99.3 percent of the domestic mobile phone shipments in the month.

This follows a bad performace in January.

Affected by new coronavirus pneumonia outbreak, China's mobile phone shipments went down 38.9 percent year on year in January to 20.8 million units.

Chinese brands, which account for 88 percent of the mobile phone shipments in China, saw a decline of 42.9 percent year on year to 18.3 million units in January.

Over the past 2 months, smart phone shipments were 26.7 million units, down 42.1 percent y/y, and represented 98.2 percent of domestic mobile phone shipments.

Part 1. Overall Mobile Phone Market in China

February domestic mobile phone shipments reached 6.4 million units, down 56.0 percent year over year. 16 new models were released in the month, down 61.0 percent year-over-year (y/y).

Over the past 2 months, domestic mobile phone shipments reached 27.2 million units and number of new model release reached 50 down 44.0 percent and 31.5 percent y/y respectively.

Part 2. Local and MNC Brands of Mobile Phones

February mobile phone shipments by the local brands reached 5.9 million units, down55.3 percent y/y, accounting for 91.8 percent of the domestic mobile phone shipments.

Number of new models released by the local brands (10 units) decreased by 70.6 percent y/y, and represented 62.5 percent of the total number of new model release in the month.

Mobile phone shipment volume for year 2020 by the local brands reached 24.2 million units, down 46.5 percent y/y, and accounted for 88.9 percent of the domestic mobile phone shipments.

Number of new models released by the local brands (43 units) decreased by 33.8 percent y/y, and represented 86.0 percent of the total number of newmodel release in the domestic market.

Part 3. Development of Smart Phones

February smart phone shipments were 6.3 million units, down 54.7 percent y/y, and accounted for 99.3 percent of the domestic mobile phone shipments in the month.

Over the past 2 months, smart phone shipments were 26.7 million units, down 42.1 percent y/y, and represented 98.2 percent of domestic mobile phone shipments.

In February, 14 new smart phone models were released, down 61.1 percent y/y, and accounted for 87.5 percent of the number of new release.

Over the past 2 months, 40 new smart phone models were released, down 31.0 percent y/y, and accounted for 80.0 percent of the number of new release.
