Zhejiang sends 100,000 ducks to Pakistan to fight against locusts

The Chinese government sent a working group on locust control and a 100,000 "duck army" to Pakistan to help eliminate locusts after the country declared a state of emergency earlier this month due to locust infestation, Huanqiu.com reported on Thursday.

The duck seedling "Guo Shao No. 1" from Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province will be on behalf of China to eliminate locusts. The duck seedlings can reach Pakistan within one day by air transport.

The scientific control of locusts can be killed by drugs or biological control.

From the perspective of environmental protection, it is natural that the benefits of biological control are more. The former has high killing costs and pesticide residues; the latter not only does not pollute the environment, but also repairs the biological chain.

Why choose ducks? According to Lu Lizhi, a researcher at the Zhejiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences, a chicken can eat 70 locusts a day, and a duck can eat more than 200, which has three times the combat capability.

Moreover, ducks eat locusts in a carpet-like 'hunting', and they will not let go of the locust's pupae.

Why haven't you considered frogs and birds? Experts claim that they are also natural enemies of locusts, but they are disciplined as 'scattering soldiers'. Frogs and birds can only kill locusts in designated areas. Once the locusts have moved, they will not follow the battle.

The Shaoxing duck is currently the main force of the "locust eradication" campaign, which can be called the "wonder" of the locust era.

The mallard duck of Shaoxing duck has a large body and strong predation ability, and has become the first choice for "locust eradication". In recent years, it has been transported to the "actual battle" for locust eradication.

Ma Duck's most brilliant record was in 2000, when a large number of locusts appeared in Xinjiang. Few ducks were raised in Xinjiang, so all the duck soldiers were transported by air from Zhejiang, and they were shipped more than 10 times in batches, totaling more than 100,000.

According to experts, killing locusts by ducks seems simple, but it's not simple. The experts must first scientifically estimate the time that the locust plague has swept through, because the ducks have the strongest ability to eliminate locusts after one and a half months of growth.

After scientific estimation, enough time can be reserved to know when it is most appropriate to send 'duck soldiers' to Pakistan to achieve the best locust killing effect.
