What is GMS (Google Mobile Services)?

GMS is a collection of API interfaces for Android mobile devices developed by Google. Mobile phone manufacturers can only install GMS on mobile devices if they are authorized by Google.

Through GMS, Google locked all its ecological products into its territory, firmly blocking the entry of the Android universal software traffic, forming a monopoly position.

GMS is Google's lifeline.

Why is it difficult for most users worldwide to leave GMS?

Google built the entire ecological empire on top of GMS.

-Software (Play Store): Most Android manufacturers around the world use Search as their default search application, OEM to their mobile devices; almost all Android users overseas download applications through the Play Store.

-Gmail: More users prefer Google's email software. At the end of 2018, Gmail had more than 1.5 billion users worldwide (Tech QQ), compared to 2.17 billion users at the beginning of Feb 2018.

-Google Maps: As of April 2018, there were 154 million users in the United States, compared to only 23 million Apple Maps users.

-Video (YouTube): YouTube has over 1.9 billion monthly live worldwide, Li Ziqi alone has 8 million + fans and generates 160 million in annual revenue.

Rather than saying that users can't live without GMS, it's better to say that Google's ecosystem is inseparable from GMS.

What is the business model of GMS?

GMS is a set of basic software architectures. With GMS, Google traffic ads are realized and complemented, and the snowball is getting bigger and bigger. However, on July 19, 2018, the European Union announced that Google monopolized the market through Android and imposed a fine of 4.34 billion euros.

Later, Google decided that starting from October 29, EU manufacturers of mobile phones and tablets using Android systems must pay Google a license fee if they used the Google App Suite, ranging from $2.5 to $40 per device.

Google also said that if the mobile phone manufacturer agrees to Google 's software service agreement and bundles the Google family bucket, the fee can be waived, which means that if the phone is bundled with Google software, the fee can be waived.

After all, GMS is just Google's traffic entrance.

What is HMS?

HMS, Huawei Mobile Services, is an alternative solution to GMS.

On January 16, 2020, Huawei released HMS Core 4.0, which comprehensively upgraded the basic API interface.

In addition to the Huawei account, payment, analysis, cloud space, and game services that have been in operation for many years, and four months of advertising and positioning services, many new capabilities have been added that developers have been waiting for.

This includes machine learning services, context-aware services, unified code scanning services, short-range communication services, panoramic services, security detection services, dynamic tag manager services, online rapid authentication services, location services, fast application services, digital rights services, sports health services, user identity services.

Many of these services also bring developers new features that integrate Huawei's core-end-cloud capabilities.

Huawei has become an all-round player, and it is still a Harmony OS away from Apple.

Why launch an HMS program?

In May 2019, Google of the United States decided to stop providing GMS services to Huawei. After that, Huawei launched an HMS program and launched a global deployment involving navigation, payment, games, and messaging applications.

The stronger, the harder it gets, the stronger it becomes.

What is the status of HMS development?

On January 15, UK time, at the first Huawei UK and Ireland Developer Conference, Huawei announced a £ 20 million investment plan to encourage UK and Irish developers to enter the HMS ecosystem.

At present, Huawei's HMS system has 600 million active users in more than 170 countries, and 72 million European users, including the United Kingdom; more than 1.3 million registered developers worldwide, and more than 55,000 HMS Core applications worldwide.

In 2019, Huawei's smartphone shipments exceeded 2.4 units, of which Mate and P flagship phones exceeded 50% year-on-year, and 5G mobile phones shipped over 6.9 million units, a record market share.
