As new coronavirus confirmed cases are rising in China, many people start to buy masks to prevent infection. Today, some users said on Weibo that facial recognition of some phones was found unusable when wearing a mask. In this regard, Bruce Lee, vice president of Huawei's mobile phone product line, gave his explanation.
Lee said on Weibo that on the Mate20 Pro, Huawei had considered scenarios where users wore masks, but the eyes and head had too few feature points to ensure security, and eventually they abandoned facial recognition unlocking in these scenarios.
He said that this is why Huawei still retains fingerprints on phones that support 3D face unlock.
However, some users have stated in the comments that their Mate 20 Pro and Mate 30 Pro 5G can be unlocked by face recognition when wearing a mask, and some users have said that they cannot be identified. The possible reason is that the number of feature points is different due to different mask sizes.
