To reduce waste and improve universal convenience, European electronics-related lawmakers will discuss today whether all smartphones, tablets and other portable devices should use the same standard charging port, such as USB-C.
In a related briefing, the European Commission said at least some lawmakers wanted to take "binding measures" to unify the interface of all portable devices.
The European Commission previously only โencouragedโ technology companies to develop standardized solutions, but did not and did not make them mandatory.
A year ago, Apple said that regulations that forced all smartphones to use the same interface would "freeze innovation", "unfavorable to the environment", and "cause unnecessary interference to customers".
But their huge user base really gives them the confidence to say this: In addition to the accessories and device manufacturing ecosystem that uses the Lightning interface is more prosperous, there are more than 1 billion Apple devices using the Lightning interface.
Once you switch to USB-C or whatever, it doesn't need to be friendly to existing product users. The speaker base and other items purchased by his users will be eliminated next time they change their phones.
European lawmakers have been considering similar regulations since at least 2009. The European Commission said that although some members hope that this policy will force companies such as Apple to comply, it is still possible to implement it on a voluntary basis.
However, in recent years, Apple's iPad Pro and other products have switched to the USB-C interface. There are even rumors that 2021 iPhones will use USB-C, but there is no conclusion yet.
