Alibaba open sources its cooling tech for data centers-CnTechPost

Alibaba will make its liquid cooling technology for data centers, which has the ability to save a lot of power, available for the public, the company announced on Monday.

The technology, called immersed liquid cooling, submerges server motherboards in liquid coolant to take advantage of liquidโ€™s superior heat-transfer capabilities when compared to air.

If the technology is used in data centers across China, hundreds of billions of kilowatt-hours of electricity can be saved in a year, according to the companyโ€™s preliminary estimates.

In 2016, Alibaba launched the world's first immersed liquid cooling server. The server was immersed in a special insulating cooling liquid, and the heat generated by the operation could be directly absorbed into the external circulation cooling.

This form of heat conduction efficiency is 100 times higher than traditional air cooling, and the energy saving effect is more than 70%.

Compared to traditional IT, behind the liquid cooling data center are huge innovations and revolutionary changes. Changes in hardware and systems require a lot of human and material input. At present, this field is almost blank and there are no standards to draw on.

The resources Alibaba open sourced covers all aspects of data center design, construction, deployment, operation and maintenance.

Through integrated design, reasonable planning reduces deployment costs, improves stability, and leads the data center to an efficient, clean, Intensive green development path.
