Chinese mobile users' monthly expenses are less than half of global average

The average monthly expenditure of Chinese mobile users in the third quarter fell 9.5% year-on-year to 47.3 yuan ($6.7), less than half the global average of $13.75, according to a latest report.

The average monthly expenditure of fixed broadband users was 35.8 yuan, a year-on-year decrease of 12%, according to a report issued by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology.

In the third quarter, the average monthly expenditure of Chinese mobile communication users was 47.3 yuan, and the average tariff for mobile data traffic was 5.1 yuan/GB, a year-on-year decrease of 47.8%. Due to the substantial increase in mobile data traffic consumption, the average monthly expenditure of mobile communication users has not changed much, only slightly decreasing by 9.5%. The average roaming tariff for Hong Kong and Macau traffic was 0.12 yuan/MB, a decrease of 28.3% compared to the 0.17 yuan/MB in 2018.

Compared with the international market, in the third quarter of 2019, China's mobile communication tariffs were at a relatively low level globally. The average monthly expenditure of mobile communication users ranked 86th from low to high among all 240 countries and regions, lower than the global level of $13.75 The average level is far lower than developed countries such as Japan ($53.74) and the United States ($54.52).

In terms of fixed broadband business, the average monthly expenditure of fixed broadband users in China has steadily declined. In the third quarter of 2019, the average monthly expenditure of fixed broadband subscribers in China was 35.8 yuan, a year-on-year decrease of 12%.

Compared with the international, in the third quarter of 2019, according to the purchasing power parity index price level from low to high, China ’s optical fiber broadband threshold price, median price and average price ranking were ranked first, ninth, and twelfth, respectively. China ’s average fixed broadband prices, threshold prices, and median prices for fixed broadband products are ranked 11th, 9th, and 13th, respectively, and are relatively low among 84 countries worldwide.
