Samsung continues to lead the global smartphone market with 80.8 million units shipped in the third quarter, with a 22 percent market share, according to a report released today by market research firm Gartner.
Among the top five handset makers, only Samsung and Xiaomi saw an increase in shipments, up 2.2 percent and 34.9 percent, respectively.
With the strong gains, Xiaomi overtook Apple for third place in third-quarter phone shipments. Huawei, on the other hand, retained its second-place position.
Worldwide smartphone shipments in the third quarter of this year were 366 million units, down 5.7 percent year-on-year.
Although smartphone shipments in the third quarter were still on a downward trend, there was a marked improvement compared to the first half of the year.
