With the increase of travel restrictions on non-local vehicles in Shanghai, the sales of new energy cars such as NIO and Tesla, which can directly obtain dedicated local licenses, are booming.
The Shanghai Municipal Public Security Bureau announced on October 24 that from November 2, 2020, from 07:00 to 20:00 daily, some elevated roads in Shanghai will be closed to the passage of cars with license plates from other provinces and cities, except on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.
Starting from the first working day after the May 1, 2021 holiday, from 7:00 to 10:00 and from 16:00 to 19:00, cars with license plates from other provinces and cities are prohibited to pass on the roads within the inner ring road, except on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.
Affected by the restrictions, Shanghai's new energy vehicle sales boom. "I signed six orders in half a day on the morning of October 25, and in the afternoon the shop was so crowded that I couldn't receive them in time." Shanghai Securities News quoted an NIO salesperson as saying, "Previously, the ES6 delivery took 2 to 3 weeks, now it is extended to 4 to 5 weeks, there are too many orders.โ

A source close to Tesla sales said, "In one morning today, Tesla sold over 80 units in a single store." Whereas normally, the store's sales is 10-20 units a day.
BYD sales people complained, "It was a busy day on Sunday and I didn't have time to drink water."
Staff at XPeng advised prospective customers to use the app to place their orders without having to visit the store.
Some BMW dealers have reduced the discount on some new energy vehicles since Monday.
One car owner who uses a non-local license plate in Shanghai told the Shanghai Securities News that he would consider buying a new energy vehicle if he still can't get a regular Shanghai license plate for a fuel car in November, "I definitely need to get a license plate once the policy comes out, otherwise it's too inconvenient."
The total number of Shanghai license plates auctioned in October was 15,435, of which 14,000 were put on individual quota; the number of participants in the auction was 121,778, and the winning rate was 12.7 percent; the total number of auctions and the winning rate were down from the previous month.
