Responding to media tests of the Apple iPhone 12's excessive power consumption when 5G is turned on, Apple's Vice President of iPhone Marketing Kaiann Drance said that the iPhone 12's added Smart Data mode can balance data and power and that Apple is additionally working on the iPhone 12's power consumption through the Software systems, and partnerships with carriers to improve battery life.
A number of 5G network-enabled phones tested browsing the web with the screen at its brightest showed that the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro lasted 8 hours and 25 minutes and 9 hours and 6 minutes, respectively.
The Samsung S20+ 5G and the One Plus 8T 5G, on the other hand, lasted 10 hours 31 minutes and 10 hours 49 minutes respectively, while the Google Pixel 5 lasted 9 hours 56 minutes.
In other words, in the same 5G mode, the Apple phone lags behind the aforementioned Android phones in terms of battery life.
Moreover, in 4G mode, the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro lasted 10 hours and 23 minutes and 11 hours and 24 minutes respectively, more than two hours longer than in 5G.
Thepaper.cn quoted Drance as saying that this time the iPhones have great battery life and it is vital that users use 5G. Apple was able to make a number of software optimizations to the entire system to extend battery life. Most importantly, Apple has added a new feature called Smart Data Mode, which allows users to manage their 5G usage.
In terms of 5G, the iPhone 12 has three data modes to choose from: Enable 5G, Auto 5G, and 4G.
"Enable 5G" is to force full-time utility 5G network mode, "4G" is to not enable 5G mode.
"Auto 5G" is the iPhone software's automatic adjustment to 5G mode when network usage is heavy and falls back to the 4G mode in standby and other modes to balance data usage, speed, and power consumption in real-time to help extend battery life.
Drance added, "What's more, we're working with our carrier partners on network deployment plans, so they're also helping with optimizing the iPhone to optimize battery life."
