In the second quarter, Huawei's phone sales essentially tied Samsung, with the gap between the two narrowing to 634,400 units, according to market research firm Gartner.
Global smartphone sales fell 20.4 percent to 295 million units in the second quarter of 2020, the data showed.
Samsung's handset sales fell 27.1 percent year-over-year, the largest decline on record. Samsung remained No. 1 with 54,759,400 handset sales and 18.6 percent market share in the second quarter.

Huawei's handset sales were 54,125,500 units with a market share of 18.4 percent, down 6.8 percent year-over-year, and up 27.4 percent from the previous quarter.
The iPhone came in third, with second-quarter sales down 0.4 percent year-on-year to 38,386,100 units, essentially unchanged from last year, and with a 13.0 percent market share.
Xiaomi ranked fourth, with year-on-year sales down 21.5 percent to 260,995,200 units, and a market share of 8.9 percent.
OPPO ranked fifth, with sales down 15.9 percent year-on-year to 23,612,100 units, and a market share of 8.0 percent.
