As of the end of May, the number of apps monitored in China was 3.6 million, up by 0.3% from April, according to China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
There are 2.11 million apps in local third-party app stores and 1.49 million apps in Apple Store China.
In May, 80,000 new apps were added and 70,000 apps were removed.
Among them, the number of game apps remained in the lead. By the end of May, the number of game apps continued to lead, reaching 899,000, an increase of 3.5 million apps from the end of April. 15,000 apps, accounting for 24.9% of all apps.
The number of daily tools, e-commerce, and life services apps reached 512,000, 367,000, and 366,000 respectively. With 309,000 apps, they ranked second, third, and fourth. They accounted for 14.2%, 10.2%, and 8.6% of all apps respectively.
Music and video apps ranked first in terms of total app distribution, with sports and health and games showing strong growth. By the end of May, China's third-party app stores had distributed 125.69 billion apps on their shelves.
Among them, music and video ranked first with 169.8 billion downloads, while games ranked second with 160.5 billion downloads, up 15% from the previous month.
Daily tools, social communication, system tools, and life services ranked third, fourth, fifth, and sixth with 150.9 billion, 145.9 billion, 117.8 billion, and 113.7 billion downloads, respectively.
Among the remaining apps, those that have been downloaded more than 50 billion times include News Reader (102 billion), E-commerce (74.9 billion), Finance (72.8 billion), and Photo & Video (51 billion).
Sports and health had 28.4 billion downloads, up 20.4 percent from the previous year, and the fastest growth rate in all categories.
