3M has developed a new technology that enables smartphones with LCD screens to have on-screen fingerprint recognition, which is often used in more expensive OLED screen devices.
The new 3M Near-Infrared Transmission System (NITS) uses an advanced, ultra-thin 3M optical display film to allow the fingerprint recognition optical sensor to be placed behind the LCD screen.
Previously, these membranes would have blocked the optical sensors from "seeing" your fingerprints, but their new film diaphragms block 97% of the light in the visible light while being transparent in the IR, allowing the IR optical sensors to read your fingerprints.
The fingerprint recognition system can be used on tablets, laptops, and other LCD devices, and brings display fingerprint readers to more and cheaper devices.
