It's no surprise that Google Chrome is the number one browser on both desktop and mobile, but a new set of data highlights the Chromium engine's overall dominance on the PC.
Last month, Google Chrome ran on no less than 69.18 percent of all PCs, according to NetMarketShare.
The second place is Microsoft Edge, also based on the Chromium engine, which took a solid second place with 7.76ย percent market share.
Mozilla Firefox is still considered to be the mainstream choice outside of Chromium, currently in third place with a 7.25ย percent market share.
While both Chrome and Edge continue to gain market share, these numbers show that the Chromium engine is the first choice for a significant number of PC users (whether Windows, Linux or macOS).
Overall, more than 77ย percent of desktop computers have Chromium-engine based browsers installed (this doesn't take into account the market share of Chromiums like Vivaldi, which NetMarketShare hasn't included in the new data).
In addition to 77ย percent of the market share attributed to Chromium, no less than 5.18ย percent of devices still rely on IE for browsing.
It goes without saying that most of those still running Internet Explorer will switch to Chromium sooner or later, and since Microsoft has been insisting on promoting Edge on all Windows versions, the total market share of this engine will set a new record in the coming months.
Firefox remains the only popular alternative to the Chromium engine, and Mozilla had previously criticized Microsoft's decision to adopt Chromium in its Windows 10 browser.
But until now, that thought seems to have paid off, as the new Edge keeps gaining new users.
